“The fact that this base chose to honour him is a huge thing for us. Jean-Pierre was a sports freak. He loved everything sports. I think he was in the military to play sports,” he told local media.

Michel Legault, the older brother of Jean-Pierre Legault, said this is “absolutely huge. We were not expecting anything.”

“Naming this building is very fitting.”

Marlaine Pouliot Legault, the wife of Legault, said it’s an honour to have him remembered.

“It’s been 28 years but sometimes it feels like yesterday that we lost him.”

She said she remembers the day her husband asked her to move to Alaska.

“He was afraid of flying,” Pouliot Legault said.

“He told me to sit down, and explained they were offered to go to Alaska. He said he would be on the AWACS aircraft,” Pouliot Legault added.

“So we moved to Alaska. Jean-Pierre was a happy person, he would turn everything into fun. He loved to help. Running, curling, he did it all, he was a natural.”

“He worked for a company in Montreal, but he found it boring. He just did the same thing over and over. He was used to military life, change jobs, move all the time.

Colonel Richard A.J. Jolette said it’s a pretty lengthy process to name a building after someone.

He said you have to find a suitable connection, the process goes all the way to the commander of the air force for certain approval processes and the director of history and heritage completes a review of the applicable person’s personal file to see if there could be any negative connection.

“We started this in 2019,” Jolette said.
